About Kathleen Kasdorf
My singing “career” began at a very early age (about 4), singing solos at church and in school. After high school in Missouri I went to Valparaiso University in Indiana where I received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Drama with a minor in Music. While a student there I performed with the opera workshop, the theater department’s musical productions and with the Chapel Choir. I went on a European choir tour after the first year, and performed in the University’s summer theater in the Pocono Mountains one summer. I also spent one year studying at Coventry Cathedral in Coventry, England participating in a drama in the church program with seven other students and our professor.
Later, I was able to return to college, this time at San Jose State University, to continue my study of music. I received the Master of Arts Degree in vocal performance in 1980. While there I studied voice with the late master teacher Jeanne Garson. While a student, and after graduation, I participated in the Opera Workshop under Irene Dalis, which eventually evolved into Opera San Jose (www.operasj.org). After graduation I also continued my private study with Miss Garson for many years.
I began teaching private voice lessons in 1978 while a graduate student, and have taught ever since. In the past I have been a faculty member teaching voice at San Jose State University and at West Valley College, but now devote myself to private students exclusively. (For a history of my performance see the performance resume page of this site.) I am an active member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing, www.nats.org and www.sfbacnats.org), and continue my study of vocal pedagogy through their many regional, national and international classes, seminars and conferences. There is always more to learn, and I am happy to draw on the expertise of many colleagues the world over. I am also a member of MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California, www.mtac.org) and have students participate in their Certificate of Merit program and Talent Bank auditions.
Non-musical disciplines have also been a source of understanding how the singer’s body functions. I have studied the Alexander Method, Feldenkrais, hatha yoga, tai chi, body mapping and dance.
I have always had a very eclectic studio and enjoy working with students at every level. Some of my students sing in choirs, some sing jazz or musical theater and others aspire to careers in opera. I encourage them to sing duets with each other whenever possible.
We endeavor to have two studio recitals a year. Students who feel ready are encouraged to participate in the recitals, the NATS Singing Festival, to prepare solo recitals and audition for local productions and competitions.
My large collection of books, music, DVD’s and recordings is available for my students to borrow.
I currently have two studios. One is in Scotts Valley, the other (on Thursdays only) is at Le Petit Trianon Theater in Downtown San Jose, near my alma mater, SJSU.
